The 4,800 hectare Mafikeng Game Reserve is composed of Kalahari and Acacia bushveld with bountiful plains game viewing as its main attraction.

The entrance to the Mafikeng Game Reserve is through the main gate off Jacaranda Drive in Mafikeng. When visiting Mafikeng be sure to include this attractive park into your itinerary. The principal circuit takes only 2 hours and is a most rewarding game viewing experience.

Location

The Mafikeng Game Reserve is located against the municipal boundary of Mahikeng Capital City, extending eastwards to cover an area of 4 600 ha of open Kalahari grassland and acacia thorn scrub.

To reach the Reserve entrance drive into Mafikeng on the R503 (Lichtenburg Road), cross over the bridge and turn right into Shippard Street. Travel east for 2 km and turn right into Jacaranda Street (immediately after the sportsground) and continue out of the suburbs to the gate.

Wildlife

Not only is the Reserve an important recreational area for the western regions of the province, but is also a breeding centre for a wide variety of game species.

The Mafikeng Game Reserve conserves large populations of plains game including white rhino, buffalo, gemsbok and giraffe which can be viewed and photographed on the open plains.

Numerous sightings of all the principal species is a special feature of the reserve.

Activities

Facilities include barbecue & picnic sites and an entertainment Lapa. An educational programme for young people has been introduced giving a valuable insight into the role and needs of conservation in society.

School touring parties are encouraged to use the park and facilities.

Accommodation

Accommodation is available in 2 self-catering guest houses, a tented camp, bush camps with basic amenities and a camp site.

Birdlife

Numerous birds may be viewed along the Molopo River.

Quick Facts

Mahikeng is a malaria free area.

The climate is generally mild to hot, winter nights can be very cold.

Warm clothing is essential for early morning and night game drives.

Bring strong shoes, sun hat, sun block, binoculars (and camera).
